HOW KALAP WORKS

KALAP is staffed by an Executive Director, and two Assistants. Along with other duties, these individuals operate a confidential hotline, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Judges and lawyers in need of information or assistance, as well as family members, friends, employers, office staff, and clients may call this hotline at any time of the day.

The KALAP staff may counsel those seeking help and, utilizing its statewide volunteer network of peer counselor attorneys, may assign attorneys to work directly with the impaired lawyer in order to assist him or her in recovery or rehabilitation. When necessary, KALAP will also refer the impaired attorney to other appropriate professional assistance, such as inpatient or outpatient treatment, therapy and medical attention.
